Wide open races for Two Oceans titles

Returning to the race with a third straight victory on the line, Caroline Wostmann believes the women’s contest at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon on Saturday will be tougher than it has been for the last couple of years.
Wostmann won the 56km race in Cape Town in 2015 and 2016 after sitting back in the first half and closing down the leaders in the latter stages, but her winning times on both occasions were relatively slow.
The 3:44:44 she needed to win last year’s event was the slowest time required for victory at the race in 15 years, though the new course was considered more difficult than the old route.
Lining up against a field packed with current and former standard marathon specialists, and with her sights set on the 87km Comrades Marathon taking place just seven weeks later, Wostmann admitted her sit-and-kick tactics might not have the desired effect on this occasion.
Should she win, it would be a historic performance, and Wostmann would become only the fourth athlete (and the first in 18 years) to earn three successive Two Oceans titles, but she admitted it was unlikely.
“I think it will be faster this year,” Wostmann said this week.
“Jenna (Challenor), Tanith (Maxwell) and the Ethiopians will probably make sure it’s a fast pace, which is going to make it difficult.”
Maxwell has paid her dues, and the former Olympian will be hungry for victory after finishing third in 2015 and second in 2016, while Challenor will hope to cause an upset on debut.
The international charge is expected to be led by another debutant, Maryna Damantsevich of Belarus, who set her standard marathon best of 2:30:07 in Warsaw two years ago, and Zimbabwean Tabitha Tsatsa, who was crowned 2013 Two Oceans champion after Russian athlete Natalia Volgina was stripped of the title for a doping violation.
After winning the Cape Town Marathon last year in a personal best 2:36:13, Tish Jones of Great Britain has proved she can be competitive in the unpredictable Western Cape conditions, though her disastrous 6:40:26 on debut last season leaves questions about her ability to go the distance.
American athletes Sarah Bard, who was fourth at the 100km World Championships in Winschoten in 2015, and Devon Yanko, who was seventh at Two Oceans two years ago, will also hope to make an impact. Alemtsehay Kakissa of Ethiopia, a former winner of the 68km Legends ultra-marathon in the Eastern Cape, will be eager to improve on her ninth-place finishes at Two Oceans in 2014 and 2016, while her compatriot Elisabeth Arsedo will hope to flaunt her speed on debut.
Meanwhile, in the men’s race, defending champion Mike Fokoroni of Zimbabwe and compatriot Collen Makaza should toe the line as the pre-race favourites.
Fokoroni’s time last year (3:13:33) was nearly 10 minutes outside the race record and it was the slowest winning performance since 1994, but the men’s contest is also likely to be a fair bit quicker this weekend, provided the weather plays its part.
Fokoroni, a former Olympic marathon runner, and Makaza, a two-time world 50km champion, hold nine Two Oceans gold medals between them and they are expected to launch a formidable assault.
Leading another strong contingent of athletes from Lesotho, Moeketsi Mosuhli will go in search of his maiden victory at the annual race, after racking up five gold medals and three podium finishes. He will be supported by countryman and three-time gold medallist Warinyane Lebopo.
The local charge will be spearheaded by in-form veteran Johannes Kekana, a former All Africa Games marathon champion, and Hendrick Ramaala, a previous winner of the prestigious New York Marathon who finished second on his Two Oceans debut in 2014.
Other contenders in the wide open race include Ludwick Mamabolo, who won the Comrades Marathon in 2012 and has shown potential over the shorter 56km distance with two Two Oceans gold medals. If the leaders struggle in the closing stages, the powerful, experienced athlete is likely to be ready to pounce.
Another local athlete, Lungile Gongqa, holds an impressive marathon best of 2:11:59, though he has perhaps pushed himself too hard by over-racing in the last few years, and he will need to dig deep to give himself a chance.
The East African contingent will be led by Ethiopian Eshetu Bekele, a former winner of the Mandela Day Marathon in Pietermaritzburg, and Kenyan athlete Moses Kurgat, who was sixth at the Cape Town Marathon last season in 2:13:16 after settling for 11th position in his Two Oceans debut.
In the half-marathon race, Namakoe Nkhasi of Lesotho will return to defend his title against a full-strength local field.
Nkhasi, who won the men’s 21km contest last year in 1:03:38, is up against four-time winner Stephen Mokoka, national 5 000m record holder Elroy Gelant, former SA champion Lucky Mohale, and the likes of Gladwin Mzazi, Sibusiso Nzima, Joel Mmone, David Manja and Vuyisile Tshoba.
Irvette van Zyl is also back in an attempt to retain the women’s half-marathon crown after securing victory last year in 1:13:14.
She faces a field including Lebogang Phalula, who won the race in 2015, in-form athlete Keneilwe Sesing, Zimbabwean star Rutendo Nyahora and Olympic marathon runner Christine Kalmer.

* The race will be broadcast live from 5.30am on SABC 2

Gongqa and Challenor lead local charge

Lungile Gongqa and Jenna Challenor made successful steps up in distance on Saturday, with the standard marathon specialists finishing as the first South African athletes in the men’s and women’s races at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town.
Though Gongqa had previously made his ultra-marathon debut at the 2012 edition of the race, when he finished 29th, he had since focussed on the 42km distance, clocking a personal best of 2:11:59 at the Cape Town Marathon in 2015 and qualifying for last year’s Rio Olympics where he dropped out of the race.
Making a triumphant return, the Eastern Cape athlete waited patiently in a large lead group for most of the 56km race, and he laid down the hammer after the final big climb up Constantia Nek to shake off a challenge from Warinyane Lebopo of Lesotho.
Gongqa won the race in 3:09:43, crossing the line 38 seconds ahead of Lebopo, who secured the fourth gold medal of his Two Oceans career.
While Gongqa racked up the first SA victory in the men’s race in four years, the foreign contingent dominated the top 10, taking the majority of the gold medals.
Former Comrades Marathon winner Bongmusa Mthembu, who finished seventh in 3:14:44, and Siphiwe Ndlela, who grabbed ninth spot in 3:17:06, were the only other South Africans to feature.
In a change of fortunes, local athletes dominated the top 10 in the women’s contest, but Maryna Damantsevich of Belarus romped to the R250 000 first prize.
Damantsevich controlled the race from start to finish to bag the title in 3:37:13, despite falling and scraping her knees at the start.
Challenor, also making her ultra-marathon debut, ran a well-judged race to finish second in 3:47:32.
Former Olympian Tanith Maxwell was the only other lady under four hours, clocking 3:55:42 to lift the veterans’ crown.
Aside from Challenor and Maxwell, five other SA women earned gold medals.
Caroline Wostmann, who won the previous two editions of the race, withdrew shortly after the 10km with a hamstring injury.
She was left in a race against time to recover for her Comrades Marathon ‘up’ run title defence in just seven weeks’ time.
Earlier on Saturday, in the half-marathon contest, Namakoe Nkhasi strengthened his grip on local road races, charging to his second straight Two Oceans title.
Nkhasi, who represented Lesotho at last year’s Olympics, set a course record of 1:03:15 to hold off countryman Khoarahlane Seutlaoli by half a minute.
While she was 39 seconds outside her winning time last year, Irvette van Zyl also defended her title in the women’s 21km race in 1:13:53.
Producing her best performance of the season thus far, Van Zyl finished 34 seconds ahead of compatriot Nolene Conrad, who grabbed second spot.

Road athletes dominated a long weekend packed with fine performances, as the nation’s elite competitors turned out in various contests around the world.
On Saturday, Lebogang Shange stepped on the podium at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge in Taicang, China.
Shange took third place in 1:23:45, crossing the line 1:29 behind Brazilian Caio Bonfim, who was fourth at last year’s Rio Olympics, in the men’s 20km race.
Elsewhere, in Cape Town, marathon runner Lungile Gongqa won the Old Mutual Two Oceans 56km ultra-distance contest.
Gongqa completed the race in 3:09:43 to earn the first SA victory in the men’s race in four years.
Maryna Damantsevich of Belarus controlled the women’s race from start to finish to bag the title in 3:37:13, despite falling and scraping her knees at the start.
Local marathon specialist Jenna Challenor, making her Two Oceans debut, ran a well-judged race to finish second in 3:47:32.
Namakoe Nkhasi of Lesotho set a course record of 1:03:15 to win the men’s half-marathon, and Irvette van Zyl successfully defended her title in the women’s event in 1:13:53.
On Monday, at the 121st edition of the Boston Marathon, wheelchair racer Ernst van Dyk carried the SA flag once again.
Van Dyk, a record 10-time winner at the race, grabbed second spot behind Swiss athlete Marcel Hug, the defending champion, in a tightly contested sprint for the line.
Hug clocked a new world best of 1:18:03 on the downhill course, with the veteran South African finishing just one second off the pace in a career best.
Meanwhile, on the track, sprinter Ncincilili Titi won the men’s 200m race in 20.14 seconds at the Gamecock Invite collegiate meeting in Columbia, South Carolina.
Titi, a World Student Games relay bronze medallist, finished 0.18 ahead of former world junior 100m champion Kendal Williams of the United States, taking 0.27 off his personal best set in Pretoria in April 2014.

Multiple athletes target SA Champs doubles

The country’s growing list of world-class sprinters will lead the charge in Potchefstroom this week, as a number of elite stars target double titles at the ASA Senior Championships on Friday and Saturday.
In-form Olympic finalist Akani Simbine will turn out as the favourite for the men’s 100m and 200m crowns, after he was confirmed in the Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) entry lists released on Tuesday.
Simbine, who has clocked impressive times of 9.92 and 19.95 in the short sprints this season, will line up against 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk (Athletics Free State), World Championships 200m bronze medallist Anaso Jobodwana (KwaZulu-Natal Athletics) and national junior 100m record holder Gift Leotlela (AGN) in both events.
Two other AGN speedsters, former national 100m record holder Henricho Bruintjies and the latest SA athlete to dip under 10 seconds, Thando Roto, will focus on the short dash, while Western Province Athletics (WPA) hurdles specialist Antonio Alkana will compete in the flat 100m event and the 110m contest over the barriers.
In the women’s sprints, Alyssa Conley is gearing up for another double, in an attempt to defend her national 100m and 200m titles.
The Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) athlete will face AGN speedsters Carina Horn and Tebogo Mamatu in the 100m event, and with World Student Games 400m champion Justine Palframan of Boland Athletics (BOLA) focussing on the one-lap dash, Conley will be the firm favourite in the 200m final.
In the men’s 400m hurdles, a quality line-up from AGN is expected to dominate the podium, with national record holder LJ van Zyl joining Commonwealth Games champion Cornel Fredericks, as well as fellow Olympians Le Roux Hamman and Lindsay Hanekom in a strong team, while Van Zyl will also have a go in the flat 400m sprint.
World Championships 400m hurdles finalist Wenda Nel will also double-up by competing in her specialist event over the barriers, as well as the flat 200m dash.
Among the middle-distance specialists, Olympic two-lap champion Caster Semenya is expected to steal the show for host team Athletics Central North West (ACNW).
While Semenya will not defend the 1 500m title she won last year, she will compete in the 800m and 400m events after winning both finals last season.
Olympic finalists Elroy Gelant (ACNW) and Stephen Mokoka (AGN) are due to meet in the 5 000m and 10 000m contests in perhaps the most anticipated of the men’s distance running events.
In the field events, Olympic silver medallists Sunette Viljoen (ACNW) and Luvo Manyonga (AGN) will concentrate on their specialist disciplines.
Viljoen, also a two-time World Championships bronze medallist, should have little trouble in defending her national women’s javelin throw crown.
Manyonga, meanwhile, is expected to face a full-strength line-up in the men’s long jump.
Despite setting a national record of 8.62m in Pretoria last month, he will face a tough battle with the entry lists also including the CGA trio of African champion Ruswahl Samaai, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Zarck Visser and Dylon Cotter.
In the women’s long jump, Olympic athlete Lynique Prinsloo (AGN) is up against SA-born Karin Mey.
While Mey, who earned bronze for Turkey at the 2009 World Championships, is entered as an individual, she will not be eligible for the SA title.
Fredriech Pretorius, who set a personal best of 8 002 points in the decathlon at the AGN Championships in Pretoria last month, will be up against SA record holder Willem Coertzen (ACNW) in the decathlon.
And on the road, in-form walkers Lebogang Shange (CGA) and Wayne Snyman (AGN) will go head-to-head in the men’s 20km event.
Anel Oosthuizen (CGA), who equalled her own SA record of 1:34:49 in Podebrady earlier this month, will toe the line as the favourite to defend the women’s 20km title.

Multiple upsets on the cards at SA Champs

While South Africa’s top sprinters are expected to steal the show, and experienced campaigners are favoured to dominate other disciplines, a number of junior prospects and resurgent stars will aim to cause upsets at the ASA Senior Championships in Potchefstroom on Friday and Saturday.
With the likes of national 100m record holder Akani Simbine, SA 200m record holder Ananso Jobodwana, world 400m record holder Wayde van Niekerk and defending 100m champion Henricho Bruintjies tipped to battle it out for the short-sprint titles, they will need to hold off a new generation of teenage speedsters.
Defending national 200m champion Clarence Munyai broke the SA junior half-lap mark in Pretoria last month, clocking 20.10 seconds, while training partner Gift Leotlela shattered the Under-20 100m record with a 10.12 performance on the fast Tuks track.
After covering the 100m dash in 9.95 earlier this season to join a growing list of local sub-10 sprinters, 21-year-old Thando Roto will also be chasing gold.
“Now I’ve got all the experience I need,” said Munyai, who competed at last year’s World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz and the Olympic Games in Rio.
“Last year I just went and ran (in Stellenbosch), with no real experience, and I hope this year I can run that well again.”
In the hurdles events, national record holder LJ van Zyl and fellow Olympian Le Roux Hamman will toe the line among the favourites in the 400m dash, but resurgent athlete Cornel Fredericks will target a comeback victory.
After struggling with an Achilles injury over the last couple of years, Fredericks burst back into form last month by clocking 49.27 in Pretoria, and he could lift the national crown.
“The 400m hurdlers in South Africa have really stepped up over the last two years, but I’m happy with the couple of races I’ve had since my comeback this season,” said Fredericks, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion.
“I think we’re going to see some fast times this weekend.”
In-form Western Province athlete Antonio Alkana will be difficult to beat once again in the 110m hurdles event, but all eyes will be on Gauteng North’s Rikenette Steenkamp, also making a successful return to the track this season after a lengthy injury hiatus, in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Steenkamp, who set a personal best of 13.04 a few weeks ago, is on the verge of becoming the second SA woman to dip under 13 seconds in her specialist discipline.
“I’ve been out for two years and my focus has been on coming back,” Steenkamp said.
“Everyone is talking about the sub-13, and it is part of the dream, but time is not the focus for me at this point.”
Meanwhile, on the infield, Luvo Manyonga is eager to take another step forward after making a return to the sport early last year.
The Olympic silver medallist has already broken the national long jump record this season with a leap of 8.62m, and he will be the favourite to earn the national title in one of the country’s most competitive disciplines.
He is up against the likes of African champion Ruswahl Samaai and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Zarck Visser.
“I’ve never felt like I had pressure on myself,” Manyonga said.
“I just want to go there and compete, and we’ll see at the end of the competition who jumps the best.”
A total of 671 athletes have entered one of the most highly anticipated ASA Senior Championships in recent years, and all 17 of the federation’s provincial members will be represented over two days of competition.
The programme will start at 9.30am at Puk McArthur Stadium on Friday and 6.30am on Saturday. Entry will cost R50 per person each day, with tickets for both days available at R80.
Live results will be available at www.asaseniors.co.za

The sprinters were the star performers on Friday, as expected, on the first of two days of competition at the ASA Senior Championships, being held at Puk McArthur Stadium in Potchefstroom.
Brushing off the cool conditions in the evening, Olympic finalist Akani Simbine outclassed a quality line-up to reclaim the SA 100m title he won in Stellenbosch two years ago.
Simbine crossed the line in 9.95, with Olympic 400m champion Wayde van Niekerk dropping down in distance to take the silver medal in 10.04.
Thando Roto earned bronze, also clocking 10.04.
“I’m pretty happy with the time, but I came here to get back the title I lost last year, so I’m very happy to reclaim my title,” Simbine said.
Pre-race favourite Carina Horn, who narrowly missed the SA record (11.06) when she clocked 11.10 in the semifinals, pulled out of the women’s 100m final due to illness.
In her absence, defending champion Alyssa Conley stormed to victory in 11.41, edging Tebogo Mamatu into second position by 0.03.
In other events, Le Roux Hamman won a tightly contested men’s 400m hurdles final in 49.35, ahead of former title holder LJ van Zyl (49.52) and Constant Pretorius (49.83) with Gauteng North sweeping the podium.
Wenda Nel, the defending champion, won the women’s one-lap race over the barriers by more than three seconds, securing gold in 55.16.
In the women’s 5 000m contest, Kesa Molotsane delivered a frightening kick over the last lap, winning the race in 16:22.30 after a hard-fought battle against Irvette van Zyl, who took second, and Nolene Conrad, who ended third.
Thabang Mosiako also kicked hard on the final lap to earn the men’s 5 000m crown in 14:03.84 against a strong field which included silver medallist Elroy Gelant and bronze medallist Stephen Mokoka.
Among the field events specialists, Sunette Viljoen shone with a 63.49m heave to win her 12th SA title in the women’s javelin throw.
“I’m in a good space, throwing well and training well,” said Viljoen, who was set to target her third World Championships medal in London later this year.
“I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Phil-Mar Janse van Rensburg earned a hard-fought victory in the men’s javelin throw.
He secured gold with a 79.86m heave, launching the implement just 12 centimetres further than silver medallist Rocco van Rooyen.
Meanwhile, Athletics SA confirmed SA-born athlete Karin Mey, who earned bronze for Turkey at the 2009 World Championships, was confirmed as an official entrant.
While she would compete as an individual for Gauteng North, as a dual citizen she would qualify to earn a medal in the women’s long jump event on Saturday.

Manyonga breaks African record

The country’s elite stars again stood up and delivered on Saturday, with long jumper Luvo Manyonga spearheading the charge as he broke the African long jump record for the second time this season, on the second and final day of the ASA Senior Championships in Potchefstroom.
Manyonga bettered his own continental mark by three centimetres, launching a massive 8.65m leap to earn the gold medal despite picking up a hamstring niggle after his first attempt.
Ruswahl Samaai took second place by producing a personal best of 8.49m.
“I’m pleased to get the gold medal, but the focus is not on the SA Championships. The focus is on the World Championships (in London) later this year,” said Manyonga, who earned his first national senior title.
Meanwhile, 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk turned the tables on good friend Akani Simbine, who had beaten him to the 100m gold medal on Friday’s opening day.
Van Niekerk won the 200m final in 19.90, crossing the line 0.25 ahead of Simbine.
“It’s a long season so I didn’t want to get too far ahead of myself,” said Van Niekerk, who eased off before the line and missed Anaso Jobodwana’s national record by 0.03.
“We all know the goals now are the World Championships and the European season, so we’re just trying to look after ourselves and maintain our bodies so we can represent SA well on the international circuit.”
Caster Semenya successfully defended her SA 400m and 800m titles, winning both finals less than two hours apart.
After taking the 400m in 51.60, she drew clear of a fighting Gena Lofstrand to win the 800m title in 2:01.03.
Lofstrand, who stayed with the Olympic champion until the final bend, took second position in 2:03.32, and Anuscha Nice, who also produced a brave effort by holding on, ended third in 2:05.88.
“I’m quite happy with where I am now,” Semenya said.
“I’m not worried about the international season at this stage. I’m just focussed on my training.”
Sprinter Alyssa Conley also defended two titles, winning the 200m final in 22.94 to add to the 100m crown she had lifted on Friday.
Orazio Cremona delivered the performance of his career, smashing his personal best by 49 centimetres to win the men’s shot put with a heave of 21.12m, with Jaco Engelbrecht also securing a personal best of 20.63 for silver.
In the women’s 100m hurdles, Rikenette Steenkamp narrowly missed out on breaking the 13-second barrier by setting a personal best of 13.02, and Tiaan Smit stunned defending champion Antonio Alkana to win the men’s high hurdles in 13.42.
Ischke Senekal won the women’s discus throw with a best attempt of 51.92m, after taking shot put gold the day before, and 43-year-old Chris Harmse closed out the annual championships with an astounding 22nd successive national hammer throw title with a 70.53m heave.

Olympic champions Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya led the charge at the weekend, earning multiple titles at the USSA Championships in Cape Town.
Semenya raced to three individual victories at the two-day student event, held at Green Point Stadium on Friday and Saturday, winning the women’s 400m (51.84), 800m (2:00.99) and 1 500m (4:16.87) titles as she successfully defended all three crowns she lifted last year.
Van Niekerk, preparing for the 200m/400m double at the IAAF World Championships in London in August, cruised to victory in both finals.
He won the 400m title in 46.28 before storming to gold in the 200m dash in 20.10.
In other events, Ruswahl Samaai launched a leap of 8.35m to win the men’s long jump, and Le Roux Hamman again dipped under 50 seconds to take the men’s 400m hurdles in 49.87.
And Rantso Mokopane was in spectacular form, earning victory in the 1 500m (3:38.83) and 3 000m steeplechase (8:51.23) finals less than 30 minutes apart.
Mokopane also grabbed silver in the 5 000m contest, though he was more than 12 seconds behind Jeromy Andreas who secured the 5 000m/10 000m double.

With less than three months remaining before the qualifying window closes on July 23, a total of 48 South African athletes have achieved either the A or B standards for the IAAF World Championships in London.
With Athletics SA reverting to the former double-standard system, 20 athletes have achieved the A qualifiers and 28 have met the required B qualifiers in their events.
While the qualifying window for the marathon, race walks, decathlon and heptathlon opened on January 1, 2016, the window period for all other disciplines opened on October 1.
In addition to the athletes listed below, Phil-Mar van Rensburg (javelin throw), Fredriech Pretorius (decathlon) and Claudia Heunis (100m hurdles) receive wild card entries for winning African titles in their disciplines last season, though their potential inclusion in the squad will rest with the ASA selectors.
Stephen Mokoka and Caster Semenya, who have both achieved the standards in other events, also qualify for the men’s 10 000m and women’s 1 500m contests respectively, as the reigning African champions.
While Wayde van Niekerk has not yet met the required standard for the 400m sprint, he also receives an automatic entry from the IAAF as the defending world champion.
Though ASA has confirmed only A-standard qualifiers will be guaranteed a place in the final team, the federation is expected to consider B-qualifiers in some events, with the nation limited to three entrants per discipline.

SA quartet ready for Doha Diamond League

Four of South Africa’s in-form track stars will open their international campaigns on Friday night, as they tackle the global elite at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha.
Sprinter Akani Simbine, middle-distance runner Caster Semenya and hurdlers Cornel Fredericks and LJ van Zyl will all compete at the opening leg of the annual series.
Simbine, who leads the national rankings with his 9.92 performance in Pretoria in March, will turn out in the men’s 100m dash.
Preparing for a baptism of fire in his first international race of the year, the Olympic finalist will meet American Justin Gatlin, a former world and Olympic champion, 22-year-old Canadian prospect Andre de Grasse, the bronze medallist at last year’s Rio Games, Jamaican powerhouse Asafa Powell, a former world record holder, and African champion Ben Youssef Meite of the Ivory Coast.
Though some of the other favourites have not yet raced outdoors this year, Simbine has displayed superb form by clocking five of the seven fastest times in the world at this early stage of the season, and he will go into the short-sprint battle among the favourites for victory.
Semenya, who cemented her place at the top of the national women’s 800m rankings with her 2:00.99 victory at the SA Student Championships in Cape Town last week, has shown good form over a variety of distances this year, and she will be eager to take a chunk off her season’s best in the two-lap event.
She faces a full-strength line-up which includes Kenyan athlete Margaret Wambui, who earned the bronze medal behind Semenya at the Rio Olympics.
Adding further excitement to a quality race, Ethiopian star Genzebe Dibaba will drop down in distance to tackle the best two-lap stars on the circuit.
Dibaba, the 1 500m world record holder, set an indoor 800m personal best of 2:00.62 in Madrid in February and her long kick will give her a chance against the shorter distance specialists.
South Africa, meanwhile, will launch a double-edged attack in the men’s 400m hurdles event, with Commonwealth Games champion Fredericks and SA record holder Van Zyl both turning out in the one-lap dash over the barriers.
Abderrahaman Samba of Qatar, who clocked 48.31 in Sasolburg in March, is the only man in the line-up to have run faster than the South African duo this season, but they will face an onslaught from Olympic gold medallist Kerron Clement of the United States, as well as Kenyan world champion Nicholas Bett and countryman Boniface Mucheru, who bagged Olympic silver in Rio.
Having settled in first and second place respectively in the 2017 national rankings, Fredericks (49.27) and Van Zyl (49.29) will hope to approach the 49-second barrier and make a statement ahead of a lengthy international season.

Programme of SA athletes competing at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Doha on Friday night (SA times):

6.25pm – Caster Semenya (800m, women)
7.25pm – Akani Simbine (100m, men)
7.35pm – Cornel Fredericks, LJ van Zyl (400m hurdles, men)

* The meeting will be broadcast live on SuperSport

Simbine and Semenya triumphant in Doha

Akani Simbine and Caster Semenya opened their international campaigns in fine style in Doha on Friday night, earning convincing victories at the first leg of the IAAF Diamond League series.
Simbine secured his maiden Diamond League win against a quality men’s 100m line-up, charging across the line in 9.99 seconds.
Former world record holder Asafa Powell finished second in 10.08, with pre-race favourites Justin Gatlin of the United States and Andre de Grasse of Canada both missing the podium.
Semenya was also in good form, proving she would again be the athlete to beat in her specialist 800m event this year.
The national record holder took control of the race on the final bend and drew ahead to win in 1:56.61, breaking the meeting record and shattering her season’s best by more than four seconds.
Margaret Wambui of Kenya took second position in 1:57.03.
In the men’s 400m hurdles race, LJ van Zyl overcame a poor lane draw to grab third spot in 49.49.
While Abderrahaman Samba of Qatar won convincingly in 48.44, Van Zyl did well to pace himself from lane eight.
Cornel Fredericks, the only other SA athlete competing in Doha, took fifth place in the one-lap race over the barriers in 49.99.
The second of 14 legs in the annual IAAF Diamond League series will be held in Shanghai on May 13.

North v South team meetings cancelled

The national track and field season has come to an early close, with Athletics South Africa confirming this week the North v South Team Challenge meetings had been called off.
The inter-provincial events, which were expected to see northern provinces competing against southern provinces, had initially been scheduled for Durban on Saturday (May 6) and Bloemfontein a week later.
The federation moved the second leg to Germiston, however, after a technical blunder with the timing system marred the Speed Series meeting at Free State Stadium earlier this year.
Nonetheless, ASA revealed in a statement it had not been able to secure sufficient funding for the series and it was cancelled.
“There was also a poor response from athletes,” said ASA president Aleck Skhosana.
“After we were unable to find sponsorship we then took a decision to save the finances we have and redirect them towards preparing our age group teams to the various international competitions.
“Therefore, the cancellation is not because ASA has no money, but because we then decided to prioritise the preparation of athletes to (international) competitions.”
