South Africa’s Olympic marathon team dominated the Totalsports Women’s 10km race in Durban on Sunday.
Irvette van Zyl, in the shape of her life this season, edged out Lebogang Phalula to secure victory in a sprint for the line.
Preparing to lead the SA squad at the Rio Games next month, Van Zyl again displayed her class on the domestic circuit by crossing the line in 33:02, with Phalula finishing second in 33:05, just three seconds outside her eight-year-old personal best.
Phalula’s twin sister Lebo (33:18) and Christine Kalmer (34:50), who will join Van Zyl in the 42km race at the prestigious multi-sport showpiece, ended third and fourth respectively.
Tanith Maxwell was the first veteran home, in eighth place overall in 36:23, and Caylee Ellero won the junior category in 39:13.
