Wayde van Niekerk extended his unbeaten run this season, scorching to victory in the men’s 400m race at the Adidas Boost Games in Boston on Saturday morning (SA time).
The world champion clocked 44.28 seconds, crossing the line 0.17 outside his season’s best set in Bloemfontein in April.
World junior champion Machel Cedenio of Trinidad and Tobago took second place in 44.87.
Justine Palframan, the only other SA athlete competing on the opening day of the inaugural meeting, finished sixth in the women’s 400m contest in 53.17.
The World Student Games gold medallist shattered her previous season’s best by more than two seconds.
Former world indoor champion Francena McCorory of the United States stormed to a convincing victory in 50.46, well clear of her nearest competitor.
Akani Simbine will turn out in the men’s 100m race on the second and final day of the event, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
